June Garden Work Party
Sun Jun 7 10:27:27 2009On June 7th, the volunteers trickled in to help get the garden in shape for the season. Jobs included: Building keyhole gardens, building a lasagna garden, moving soil and sod, planting seeds and building willow arbours and benches with Judy from Willow Springs Creative Centre! It was a great day! Thanks everyone who came out to help!
Belluz Day
Sat Aug 8 03:34:04 2009The Group spent the day at Belluz Farms weeding the pea patch then moving on to the ripening strawberry fields to learn how to pick and how the fruit develops. We also went into a newly planted field to de-blossom some strawberry plants so the plants put all their energy into growing and establishing rather than fruiting.
Community BBQ
Sat Aug 8 03:40:11 2009R2H hosted a BBQ at the beginning of the season to introduce the new crew to the community. The crew gave tours to all the guests, getting used to talking about all the new aspects of the garden they had just learned about. Thanks everyone for coming!
CSA Harvesting
Sat Aug 8 03:45:23 2009Each week, the R2H crew preps three boxes to go to families involved with the Fay Peterson organization. The crew prepares by writing a short garden update, typing out some recipes to go with the items in the box then it's harvest time! We also include items from farms we work on each week. This week, in addition to our regular harvest, the bins include frozen strawberries from Belluz Farms.
Squash Queen!
Sat Aug 8 03:50:47 2009Spending with day with Shannon the squash queen - there's so much more than squash! The pigs were a hit, and the weeding was fierce but great!
rain water harvesting
Sat Aug 8 03:59:36 2009The site has begun to capture rainwater! Started last year by our initial crew, the pond has been lined with pond liner and the hose runs from the rain barrels attached to Folino's Superette all the way into the pond. Currently the pond is full! We use the water to do the hand watering portion of the site (which is a lot!). Now we have to get it aerated!
